What is GORE-TEX?
The GORE-TEX® membrane is an exclusive heat-sealed technical fabric containing about 1.4 billion microscopic pores per square centimeter. GORE-TEX® has developed three specific types of membrane for the footwear sector, each with specific functional properties.
The Science
How the Membrane Works
Water Stays Out
Each pore is approximately 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water. Liquid water simply cannot penetrate the membrane — no matter how long you stand in the stream, the rain, or the slush.
Sweat Gets Out
Those same pores are 700 times bigger than a molecule of moisture vapor. Perspiration in gas form escapes easily, so your feet stay dry from the inside too — the breathability that separates GORE-TEX from a rubber boot.
