Real solid pair of cold weather mountain boots. Fit is pretty similar to the Pilgrims, slightly narrow in the forefoot. Heel and instep are held firmly.
Outsole has a solid heel brake and good lugs, rubber rand is high and seems real durable. The sole is listed as being “Hard” which is the stiffest AKU offers, but it wasn’t as stiff as I expected. It’s not rock solid, but it’s pretty similar to other heavy mountain boots where you can bend the toe a bit. Leather is very smooth, feels like a full grain leather even though it’s listed as nubuck. The lace loop below the fabric middle ankle loop is a locking hook, which is nice, though it’s a bit of an unusual arrangement with a hook below a loop. There’s a lacing hook on the tongue which is awesome for keeping the tongue centred. It’s a mid height boot around 7-8”, but for a boot this high I’d like to see a 3rd lacing hook on the upper instead of just 2.
Ankle support is quite stiff, but the soft leather at the top of the tongue makes it comfortable. Inside the boot you can tell it’s insulated under the insole and around the boot, but the tongue is un-insulated, which I assume is for proper fit and comfort. The insole has a reflective aluminum layer for heat retention.
My scale said 2084 grams for a pair of men’s 9.5 US with insoles and laces. A little on the heavy side, but for durable leather with a high rand, stiff outsole, and insulation, it makes sense.
Overall an awesome pair of boots! Looking forward to testing their warmth this winter.
Very solid boot. Needs a little time to break in and then they are Golden. Excellent suport on roughest terrain I can find on the Canadian Sheild.
I was looking for a confident boot for in the bush and I really hope they last a good long time.
